Raised in Bay de Verde, Conception Bay, Greg was influenced by his father and the singing and playing of his grandparents at a very young age. After beginning as a drummer with a group put together by friends, he became interested in traditional music as a teenager when he first started playing guitar to accompany his Dad's accordion playing and immediately took to a variety of traditional instruments.
Now proficient on guitar, mandolin, tenor banjo, bozouki, fiddle, bass, piano accordion, Greg is also a fine singer of traditional songs and has written and recorded several original songs with the Walsh Family Band.
A regular at local music sessions in the St. John's area, Greg has also played and recorded with groups such as The Navigators, Celtic Cross (Windsor, ON), Middle Tickle, The Irish Descendants, Christina Smith and Jean Hewson, Foc'sle, The Jason Whelan Band, Graham Wells and Chain Rock, The Once, The Dardanelles and numerous other groups and musical combinations. As a studio musician, he has contributed instrumental and vocal tracks to a wide variety of projects ranging from Christmas compilations to instrumental albums and continues to pursue music as much as possible. He is also currently a member of the popular Newfoundland/Irish/Bluegrass group The Masterless Men, having joined them as a fiddler in 2007.
Though he frequently travels to Bay de Verde when time permits, Greg lives in St. John's with his wife Karla and new daughter Shannon. Together with his father, Greg recently designed and constructed a home recording suite (Walsh's Hill Studio) where together they are currently producing and recording their first instrumental recording project in an attempt to capture and preserve traditional tunes and songs from their hometown area of Bay de Verde. They hope to begin a new Walsh Family Band album in the near future.
